Class Description
Water Source of the water will determine what naturally occuring chemicals and minerals are present.
Preservatives Chemicals used to prevent spoilage of the product, consisting of antioxidants and anti-microbials to stop growth of fungi, yeast, and bacterial contamination. Classes of these types of materials are organic acids, alcohols, aldehydes, phenolic resins, esters, and quinone and amine based compounds.
Humectants Chemical agents used to absorb moisture from the air and form a thin film on the skin to prevent drying. Examples are Calcium Chloride, Ethylene Glycol, Propylene Glycol and Glycerol.
Surfactants These compounds stabilize the mixture of oil and water solutions by reducing the surface tension between the two materials. Basic classes are anionic, cationic, non-ionic, and ampholytic solutions
Oils, Fats, Waxes A variety of naturally occurring animal fats and vegetable oils to provide soothing and smoothing action on the skin and grooming effects on head and beard hair. These include fish oils, cocoa butter, almond oil, apricot kernel oil, sesame oil, safflower oil, wheat germ oil, avocado oil, turtle oil and mink oil.
Perfumes A mixture of essential fragrence oils, aroma compounds, fixatives and alcohols to produce a pleasant scent to the cosmetic product. Mainly derived from natural resources like plants and animals.
Colorants Consist mainly of organic, inorganic and natural color pigments and dyes. Classified as FD&C, D&C, and external D&C.
